I have the honour to acknowledge the re-

ceipt of your telegram of the 20th. instant, authorizing the

Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and China to issue notes

in Hongkong in excess of the total authorized issue of

$8,000,000 on condition that coin or bullion to the full

amount of the excess is deposited with the Colonial Treasurer

and the Colonial Secretary.

The limit of $8,000,000 mentioned in your

telegram is the total authorized issue of the Bank at its

various Branches, but the limit allotted to the Hongkong Branch

is $3,300,000 and any excess over that amount will be covered

by the deposit of coin or bullion to the full amount of the

excess under the control of this Government.
